PLENARY CONFERENCE IN ESTORIL, PORTUGAL

The plenary event was held at the Estoril Congress Centre located at the seaside resort of Estoril.

 

The programme of the plenary conference included:

Six keynote speakers from the major regions of planted forest resources on the subject of Planted Forest Development:

  • from an Asian Perspective, Liu Shirong, Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Forestry
  • from an African Perspective, Godwin Kowero, Former Secretary of the African Forest Forum
  • from a European Perspective, Gert-Jan Nabuurs, Alterra Wageningen University
  • from an Australasian perspective, David Rhodes, CEO New Zealand Forest Owners Association
  • from a Latin American Perspective, Elizabeth de Carvalhaes (Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association (BRACELPA))
  • from a North American Perspective, Michael Lee Clutter (University of Georgia)

 

Each keynote presentation was followed by an assembly discussion on the topic in order to provide input for the final declaration.

Five summary statements (one from each scientific workshop) emphasizing the specific role of planted forests in sustainable development.

Three panel discussions to emphasize the role of planted forests in relation to current global issues.

Drafting of an official declaration geared towards policy and decision makers and final recommendations endorsed by the Congress participants.
